In case you haven't noticed, this blog has morphed into a veritable online repository for any mildly interesting ice cream recipe I stumble upon. Unfortunately, as is usually the case, my eyes are bigger than my stomach.

Here are some of the latest recipes I've found (deep breath):

show churned idolatry

It has recently come to my attention that the good folks over at Edy's have started a flavor-off.

Here's how the contenders stack up:

- Cookies 'n Dreamz (chocolate light ice cream with chocolate cookie pieces)
- Cheesecake Diva (cheesecake ice cream with brownie pieces and a fudge swirl)
- Mint Karaoke Cookie (mint light ice cream with chocolate cookie pieces)
- Most Orange-inal (vanilla light ice cream with an orange sorbet swirl)
- One Split Wonder (banana flavored light ice cream with decadent fruit and chocolate swirls)

I know what you're thinking: where's the originality?! Haven't we all tried these flavors before? What makes them so special and, more importantly, worthy of the "idol" distinction? If you ask me—and you didn't—nothing.

If anything, I might vote for "One Split Wonder" just because I love some of the current banana split iterations that are available on the market. In this instance, the "decadent fruit" they mention on the packaging appears to be little more than cherries and strawberries (according to the ingredient list). Decadent?

At any rate, if these flavors appeal to you, buy some ice cream and cast your vote.

and now, the continuing stooory of an ice cream that's gone to the dogs

I came across a company called Polar Pups today (formerly Chilly Dawg). As you may have guessed, they make ice cream... for dogs!

Looks like they only have four flavors at the moment:

- Beggin' Banana (unsalted soy milk, banana puree, dehydrated banana slices)
- Berry Bite (unsalted soy milk, blueberry puree, vanilla)
- Barkin' Apple (unsalted soy milk, apple puree, cinnamon)
- Puppy Nutter (unsalted soy milk, peanut butter, peanuts)

It's only available in certain locations, but, not surprisingly, I'm kind of curious how it tastes.

Well, sort of.

If you're lucky enough to live in the bay area, you'd do yourself a favor to check out Three Twins Organic Ice Cream.

You can find four of their flavors (madagascar vanilla, bittersweet chocolate, milk & cookies, and mint confetti) at any of these fine establishments.

But the real treat is going to one of their scoop shops, where you can indulge in any of their original flavors, such as:

- Cookie Jar (vanilla ice cream with three kinds of cookies)
- Strawberry Je Ne Sais Quoi (strawberry with a splash of balsamic vinegar)
- PBC3 (peanut butter cookie confetti crunch)
- The Chocolate Project (chocolate ice cream with flecks of dark chocolate, cacao nibs, chocolate cookies, and chocolate chips)

This morning I had a Ben & Jerry's coupon waiting in my inbox. While this is certainly no cause for alarm, it did bring a few new flavors to my attention. As near as I can tell, these flavors are only available at scoop shops, but I haven't actually confirmed that suspicion. That being said, here are some reasons why you should seek out your local scoop shop:

- Coconut Seven Layer Bar (coconut ice cream with coconut & fudge flakes, walnuts & swirls of graham cracker & butterscotch)
- Bananas on the Rum (banana ice cream with a buttery rum brown sugar swirl)
- Pumpkin Cheesecake (pumpkin cheesecake ice cream with a thick graham cracker swirl)

These new flavor discoveries led me to the Haagen-Dazs website to see what's new and, low and behold, they're also featuring some new flavors:

- Green Tea, available until august.
- Fleur de Sel Caramel

As well as a couple of new frozen yogurts:

- Vanilla Honey & Granola
- Wildberry

butter!

to my horror/disgust/shock, one of the most popular flavors of jelly bean is buttered popcorn. could there be anything more disgusting?! it did get me thinking, what about a butter-flavored ice cream? browned butter, to be exact. with just a hint of toasty, nutty goodness, i think it just might work in some applications--so long as it didn't come off as simply eating butter.

ben and jerry and everyone we know

so, when's the last time you checked out ben & jerry's? well here's the rundown on their flavors for 2008.

first up is one cheesecake brownie (cheesecake ice cream with cheesecake brownie chunks), so named for its contribution to help make poverty history--one pint at a time. let's help get poverty off the front page by putting obesity in its place.

next is imagine whirled peace (caramel & sweet cream ice creams swirled with fudge peace signs & toffee cookie pieces). fudge peace signs? really?

i probably shouldn't even be mentioning this (because, technically, it's not ice cream) but there's a new frozen yogurt on the block by the name of strawberry banana (strawberry frozen yogurt with strawberries and a strawberry swirl). jeez. what about the banana?!

saving the best for last, i think the brightest star in the sky is their new flavor cake batter (yellow cake batter ice cream with a chocolate frosting swirl). i can feel myself getting fatter just thinking about this one. in a good way. fyi, cake batter seems to be a new flavor for many ice cream makers this year.

i'm sure you're all aware that bees are disappearing at an alarming rate.

weren't they supposed to inherit the earth? what happened?

what you might not know is that haagen-dazs (a wholly-owned subsidy of the pillsbury company) has a pretty decent site about this phenomenon. it's no small coincidence that they've released a limited edition flavor from now until december: vanilla honey bee.

you may recall they tried out honey in their reserve flavor, hawaiian lehua honey & sweet cream. where were the bees then? hmm.

and while i'm on the topic of haagen-dazs ice cream, let's not forget haggen-dazs' other new flavor of note: carmelized pear & toasted pecan. we have 2007 flavor search winner, leslie zoerb, to thank for this coma-inducing combination.

i know i'm the last person to tell you this, but if you haven't tried toasted coconut sesame brittle yet, what are you waiting for?! live a little.

in short: eat ice cream. save the bees. save the world.
